INTRODUCTION  [TO THE INDEX OF NAMES]

The following index of names contains 433 pages and comprises approximately 7300 entries.

Some of the entries are undoubtedly duplicated because they will have been entered as separate Births, Marriages and/or Deaths.  This is because it will have been impossible to verify connections between events, or allot many to family groups.

This index is not divided, as was done by CTM Beamish, into major and minor families since in reality all the families are interconnected, even if proof of that interconnectedness is often lacking.  This applies especially to the Irish families.  It would seem also in this age that discrimination is no longer acceptable.

As will be seen from the first page of Index A some families have been allotted a family code.  This follows Malcolm's system and may aid the identification of  particular families.

Each entry gives the full names of parents and children so as to enable an easier transfer of information to a drop-down chart.

The sources for entries have not been given separately since this would involve a coding system for reference back and would seem an unnecessary complication.  A list of sources is given in Part 1.

 A CAVEAT.
It should be always borne in mind that any index is only an indicator to source material.  Mistakes have been made, are made, will be made.  A long held belief may be based upon fact yet not be wholly true.  People exaggerate, falsify or deny for perhaps honourable and respectable reasons.  Officials make mistakes both in originals and copies.
This index is only a guide and should be regarded as thus.
